چکیده

Based on definitions, two joint-criteria, namely, the optical-thin constraint and the energy budget constraint, are proposed to judge whether the emission nature of radio pulsars is incoherent or obligatory to be coherent. We find that the widely accepted criterion, kTB ≤ ǫ, is not a rational criterion to describe the optical-thin condition, even for the simplest case. The energy budget constraint could be released by introducing a certain efficient radiation mechanism (e.g. the inverse Compton scattering, QL98) with emission power of a single particle as high as a critical value Psing,c ∼ 10 −4 − 10erg · s. This in principle poses the possibilities to interpret high luminosities of pulsars in terms of incoherent emission mechanisms, if the optical-thin constraint could be released by certain mechanism as well. Coherence may not be an essential condition to account for pulsar radio emission. Subject headings: pulsar: general radiation mechanism: non-thermal

A Generic Pulsar Radio Emission Mechanism

A generic interpretation of pulsar radio emission that does not rely on the identification of a specific emission mechanism is explored. Coherence is quantified in terms of a coherence factor, which implies a maximum brightness temperature; the possible significance of Poincaré invariants is pointed out, and the potential use of higher order moments of the intensity to measure the coherence is ...

Pulsar radio emission is believed to be originated from the electron-positron pairs streaming out from the polar cap region. Pair formation, an essential condition for pulsar radio emission, is believed to be sustained in active pulsars via one photon process from either the curvature radiation (CR) or the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) seed photons, or sometimes via two photon process. In pu...

Emission altitude in radio pulsars

This paper presents a method of estimation of emission altitudes using observational data-precise measurements of pulse profile widths at low intensity level. The analysis of emission altitudes obtained using this method for a large number of pulsars gives constraints that should be useful for theory of coherent pulsar emission. It seems that radio emission originates at altitudes of about few ...

Toward an Empirical Theory of Pulsar Emission. X. on the Precursor and Postcursor Emission

Precursors and postcursors (PPCs) are rare emission components, which appear beyond the main pulse emission, in some cases far away from it, and are detected in a handful of pulsar. In this paper we attempt to characterize the PPC emission in relation to the pulsar main pulse geometry. In our analysis we find that PPC components have properties very different from that of outer conal emission. ...

Reversals of Radio Emission Direction in Psr B1822 09

The pulse profile of pulsar B1822 09 exhibits a very peculiar kind of mode changing: a “precursor” appearing just in front of the main pulse (MP) exhibits periods of nulling, during which an interpulse (IP) becomes detectable at a rotation phase separated by roughly 180 from the precursor. We propose that this bizarre phenomenon, which requires an information transfer between the two components...
